Becoming a Member
Our members come from all walks of life, have varying skills and available time and are of any age. Every one of them has something in common - a love of symphonic music.
A symphony orchestra's daily life is populated by the wonderful players who perform on stage. But there are many others who also contribute to making those fabulous concerts possible. We value every input from the wider community and warmly welcome new members, playing and non-playing, at any time. Stonnington Symphony members receive concession prices on concert tickets, regular updates about all our activities as well as a few other little extras. They also have voting and participation rights within the organisation.
Having a wide and diversly skilled membership helps us fulfil our mission to keep producing concerts at the highest possible standard. Your annual fee of only $20 will also go towards supporting the ongoing work of this leading community arts organisation.

Becoming a Player
In 2025 Stonnington Symphony will stage a three concert series in the Malvern Town Hall. In previous years we have also performed a children's program and Symphony in a Day - our flagship outreach program. For many years we have also performed a free outdoor performance which typically took place on the final Saturday of February each year. This event, The Classics: Symphony, has been produced by the City of Stonnington.
Stonnington Symphony does not hold auditions; instead we have guideline standards which all players should have attained. If you have reached Grade 8 AMEB (or equivalent) on your chosen instrument, have at least 2 years post-educational orchestral experience and would like to be considered to play in the orchestra, then please email the orchestra. Your details will be forwarded to the relevant section convenor who will contact you as soon as an appropriate vacancy becomes available.
Places for each program are limited and are by invitation.
Membership of the organisation is a prerequiste for all players. An annual membership fee of $20 is payable each financial year. In addition, players also pay a concert fee of $40 for each program in which they play.
Players are required to attend six rehearsals for each program in which they are scheduled to play. These rehearsals take place in the Prahran RSL and the Malvern Town Hall from 7:00pm to 10:00pm on designated Tuesday and occasional Thursday evenings. Players are required to commit to all rehearsals for the performance in which they are involved.
